I have caught some extraordinarily large bluegill but most of the time I never thought about how big they were. I have used bluegill as big as 12" for bait when fishing for flatheads. It was a 12" bluegill that put an 89lb flathead in my boat last year.

I have measured my bigger crappie and 15" to 17" are the big ones. We have a lake just outside of town that will produce 14" to 16" crappie everyday of the year. The biggest I ever pulled out of that lake was just over 20" but something was not quite right about it. Most that I catch that are 16" or bigger are extremely thick but this one was very narrow and looked to be sick. It had some old scars on it's back from where a blue heron had tried to eat it at one time or another but they had seemed to heal ok. I don't know what was wrong with it, maybe it was just real old. I don't usually keep the crappie over 16" so that one went back into the lake.

Boy does that question bring back memories of fishing with my father.  Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, dad would take his jon boat to a small lake near the house.  He always caught the most and biggest bluegill.  Of course, I always ended up catching the most trees.  He always told be not to drag my line when we were headed in.  But of course being a kid, I always did, and usually got snagged. One day I got snagged and stopped the boat, of course I heard "Baby, didn't I tell you not to drag your line", well the boat started going the wrong way.  When all was said and done,I had a 23 in crappie, won the fishing rodeo that week new fiberglass canepole and tackle box. Thanks for the great memorie

I have heard stories about Toronto. The best big crappie lake in the state and one of the best in the country. Here in Sedan, the lakes just outside of town produce 16" fish quite often and bigger crappie on occasion but Toronto is legendary. I have not made it there yet but it is not all that far away so I will have to make the trip sooner or later. We may not have a lot of things here in Kansas but we do have giant flatheads and giant crappie.

i can't remember my biggest blue gill because i haven't caught one in like a year and a half. but my brother caught the biggest gill he had ever seen. it must have 3# or better. he caught it on a john deere colored tripple ripple grub. you can get a pack of tripple ripples at a bass pro shops near you or online it cost me about $18 after s/h. you might be able to find some thing like it at scheels if thats closer.

my biggest crappie had to have been at least 3-4 pounds! my friend has a farm pond that has to be over populated by `em. i only fished there three times but i have caught at least 20-25 crappies.

my tip for catching slabs is: use a 2 1/2 inch tripple ripple grub with a 1/16 ounce jig head, i use them in full chartruse, and reel in real slow.

I had some fantastic luck catchin' crappies in the Chickahominy lake just west of Williamsburg, Va. We went up into some of the feeder creeks and fished monnows deep with bobbers and were pulling out 16 and 17 inch crappies! The season was summer-June if I remember correctly! Great fishin'!

I'll tell ya what.....a big blue gill will give you and exciting fight! My dad and I once were able to pull in 12 inch hogs out of a lake in No. Michigan. Real beauties-deep purples and blues. We could see 'em on the beds in mid June and they would hit the nightcrawlers we threw at 'em like freight trains! Those days are gone though. New houses around the lakes( Shag and Mithell lakes) have really affected the water - not to mention the introduction of tiger muskies. The big panfish are gone. I'd love to find 'em again!

does the size matter? yes for some, the freedom of being on a lake/shoreline and having a grand ole' time with friends/loved ones is the largest catch. Have a great day fishing and be safe. XoXO FishinGal Texas

My biggest Bluegill measured 11" and I caught it on a live worm (well, 1/3 of a worm), with a bobber about 1 1/2' above it with a split shot sinker just below the bobber. Can't go wrong with that setup. I caught that fish last summer in my pond. My biggest crappie I caught 3 days ago on a little bitty pink-headed jig with a soft, white body in my neibor's pond. It was 11" long.

10" 'gill and 17" crappie. The crappie was unusual since the lake it was caught from doesn't consistently over 14". My question is what time of year did everyone catch their biggest crappie? Mine was in the spring.

14" has been my biggest crappie, but there was that big one that got away when my ice hole had shrunk some overnight.

I didn't really weigh it, but I caught this crappie which looked like it was a hybrid with a largemouth bass and certainly felt like it. It slammed crankbaits I was casting into a fallen tree on this old pond near my home some ten summers ago.
