What is your favorite rod and reel combo, and what species do you fish for with it?

I like my 5' Eagle Claw "Feather Light" with a Quantum Micro MS00 spinning reel with 4lb. test. Bass are my favorite fish to target with this set up.

My favorite combo(as of now) is an Acadis Sports Baitcast reel paired with a  6"6' MH Acadia sports F-series rod. I use this to catch Largemouth Bass.

Yanosick: How do you like the Acadia baitcaster? I have a few of their rods and a spinning reel and am very happy with them. I am thinking about another baitcaster to use ase a light duty trolling rod. I will not be casting with this combo on a regular basis. Tom

I really don't have a favorite. As long as I am fishing it's cool.

Bobber Rods:

For Steelhead I use St Croix Avid series 9' 6-12lb or 9.5' 4-10lb with Shimano Symetre 2500, and a Lamiglass 8.5' 12-25lb with Symetre 2500 for big natives.

For Salmon, Lamiglass 8.5' 12-25lb with Symetre 4000.

For pulling KwikFish for Salmon Lamiglass 8.5' 12-25lb with Okuma Induron.

For Bass, I just picked up Loomis 7' paired with Pflueger Trion.  I have not used this set up yet.

Fly fishing I use a Jim Teeney model Lamiglass 4 pc 9' 3wt, or St Croix Avid series 9' 5-6wt.

I also have various pack rods, plug rods, and spinning rods for bass, panfish, trout, and other species.  Symetre 750 or Curado

Hey Pegsguy, sorry to take so long answering your question, but its been awhile since i've been on the computer.

There baitcasters are AWESOME. They are extremely smooth(the smoothest), well built(all aluminum, even the side plates) and great braking system. You will not get backlashes with this reel. and even with the brakes on high, the bait will soar for quite some ways. These reels are very affordable, unlike most other reels you see in stores. These reel could be priced $200 or more. If I were you i'ld get one. I've had mine since they first came out and am not disappointed. it's the best $80 i've spent.

Yano: You didn't mention the drag on that Acadia reel. I have no problems with the quality of what they sell, and they are very transparent in the way they do business. Also I give them high marks for warranty performance and customer service. A word to anyone reading this post: Acadia does not sell high end tackle, but does offer affordable mid-priced gear with good to better quality. Most of the Items I and my freinds have purchased from them have exeeded expectations. Tom

Hey Peg: the drag power is 9 lbs, which is slightly above the national average for drag power( the average is 8.8 lbs).

Although the reel is priced cheaper than other "high end equiptment", it is better than Shimano or Quantum.

This reel is very hard to beat. you would have to spend at least $250 or more to get the same quality. In my opinion it is high end, but without the high end price!

Glad to hear that what I felt was correct. Sometimes you just get a feel that a company is actually trying to do the right thing. I have 3 large trolling setups but they are a bit much for a 14' boat in small water. I bought a Diawa baitcaster combo as a light trolling rod and it seems OK, but I'm thinking I need a rod for the other side of the boat and the Diawa combo is no longer available. ( I thought $35 was pretty cheap for the quality I got, wasn't quick enough to get a second one) Looks like I'll deal with Acadia and it will cost me about 3X the Diawa price. You snooze, you lose! I am going to say my all time favorite rod and reel combo is a UL rig made up of the center section of a bamboo fly rod and 80% of the tip of my original UL rod (purchased in'62).  I put this rod together in 1969.  I a Mitchel 308, purchased in 1962 and a Quick 110 purchased in 1970.  I use them with 2# line.

Hey Pegsguy, if you go Acadia sports, you will be making a wise choice. Even though you are spending 3X more, the Acadia Baitcaster is probably 10X better. I cannot think of any reel beating this one. Good luck on your next reel choice.

Pegsguy, it is harder for me than it used to be and if the light is failing, I'm toast and not just with fine stuff.  I am seriously considering one of those pocket gooseneck lamps.  If I break my fly rods out again I mahave to get one of those things that holds the fly while you tie it on.  I may even try the needle threader trick.

I usually fish inshore salt. But I like Hurricane Redbone rods 7'. And shimano stradic reels.

Maybe it's me, but I don't understand 10# line for crappie that might weigh 3# if you are blessed. If I can pull a 30" tiger muskie out of timber on 5# braid, a crappie shouldn't be a problem. Tom

It would be a better decision to use 6 lb test.

I have an abu 6600bcx on an abu colonial med heavy 6'6" rod with 30lb spider wire, and a bass pro gold series that is the same equipment just with a different name on it. I use these two for every thing. I have about 200 rods with reels. most are bail reels. The only two guarenteed to go when I do are the abu and bass pro. My only complaint is that the rods are one piece. It is kind of hard to load in the car. I have a very fast pontiac sun fire. I can even pull my 1972 glasstron v165 I fish from. It won't go every where, so I have a 14ft canoe also. we call my car the truck. when I buy again I will buy more of this bass pro I have. I love this reel and rod. They are accually stronger than the abu. I paid $250 for the abu, and $50 for the bass pro. That is the bass pro's regular price. I also have a collection of old abus made from 66 to now. I would also put my 1978 zebco 171 up against the most expensive cat fish rig any day. That little crappie rig has caught to many 30+ pound cats to count. it just don't cast very far, it only holds fifty yards of 4lb diameter braid. It has machined stainless steel gears. here are some pics.

My favorite catfish rig is a 7' Rhino medium-heavy baitcast rod with a kevlar tip, and a Penn 209 level wind reel with 250 yards of Trilene XT in 40 pound test.
