Hi, ive been fishing in small ponds for catfish and have only caught
one big one. I would apreciate any body's tips on how to catch
tthe big one. The biggest iv'e caught so far is 5 1/2 lbs.
I use some stink bait and worms but never catch any big ones.

When catfish become large, they also become much more predatory, and the best bait for large cats is live bluegill. Phoenix Arizona ~N.A.F.C.~B.A.S.S.~BoatU.S.~N.R.A.~

5 pounds might be as big as they get in that small pond.

this time of the year catfish arent gonna hit spiny baits like bluegill as much as they would a sucker or a chub. even though they probally arent in that pond they should still get crushed. i got my first flathead off a live perch at the river that was only in for a few seconds and there arent any perch in the river so try suckers or chubs.

Live bait will bring out the bigger fish and different species. Stink bait is a staple for channels, Shiners and blue gill for blues and flats. Channels are more opportunistic than the other two.
You can place a stink bait on a flats head and there are good odds we will just sit and look at it or swim away. Place a struggling bait fish in front of him and it is like playing with a kitty cat. If it moves they are almost compelled from their natural predatory response to attack it if only to kill it so it quits wiggling around.
Flats more than blues are almost as predatory as bass are and will go for the flash and movement.
The blue in my avitar was caught on a large shiner.
